Camosun's HR program prepares students for success at national competition

Four talented students from 窪蹋勛圖厙 had the opportunity to compete at HRC West, an event that brings together teams of business students from Western Canada to explore pressing HR challenges.

The group of HR students completed in HRC West 2023.

Student teams at HRC West are faced with a comprehensive business case that explores a pressing HR challenge identified by working Chartered Professionals in Human Resources.

Despite tough competition, the Camosun team secured an impressive third place out of 16 teams, demonstrating their excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work together as a cohesive unit. This is the best team Ive ever been a part of, says Human Resource Management and Leadership student Francis Lecours of the team dynamics. My teammates were keeners, eager to learn, highly motivated and willing to do their best.

Throughout the eight weeks of practice sessions, students worked on a variety of business cases, presenting their solutions to faculty members to hone their presentation skills. Putting skills essential for their careers to practice, the team focused on time management and problem solving to make sure they could excel no matter the challenge. Perhaps the most significant benefit of the HRC West training was the improvement in our presentation skills. We learned how to craft a compelling story, deliver it in a clear and concise manner, and engage our audience effectively, says student Jessi Carr.

While the team may not have brought back the gold, they did gain experiences which will carry them forward beyond their time at Camosun. I truly feel as though the new skills, connections, and friendships that I developed here will last a lifetime and that this experience has helped me develop professionally in ways I had never imagined, says team member Samuel Montague.

"This is the best team Ive ever been a part of. My teammates were keeners, eager to learn, highly motivated and willing to do their best."

Looking ahead, Camosun is excited to host HRC West in 2024, providing the opportunity for future students to develop their skills and make meaningful connections with peers and professionals from across Western Canada.
