Chargers volleyball named to PACWEST All Star Teams

Top honours for playoff bound Chargers volleyball

The Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) announced the league awards, and several Camosun Chargers volleyball players received top honours.

On the womens team, Mika Yamada (Rifu High School/Sendai, Japan) was named a First Team All-Star, and Rachel Leduc (College Jean-Eudes/Montreal, QB) picked up Second Team-All Star and also named to the All-Rookie Team.

On the mens team, Vitor Pereira (Izabela Hendrix/Belo Horizonte, Brazil) picked up a First-Team All-Star nod, Brendan Folkerts (MBCI/Winnipeg, MB) was named a Second Team-All Star, and Jacob Ringma (Centennial Christian/Terrace, BC) was named to the Rookie All-Star Team.

Yamada is ranked seventh in the league in aces (0.54 average), ranked twelfth in digs with an average of 1.83 (88 total) and put up 28 kills. Leduc sits in tenth place in the league for total offensive points with an average of 2.76 points per set, ninth overall in kills (2.52 average), leading the team with 126, and laid out 84 digs.

Pereira, Folkerts, and Ringma are all in the top 10 in the league for kills with their averages of 3.30, 2.90, and 2.61 per set respectively. Pereira averaged 0.35 aces per set, putting him in the fifth spot in league standings, while Folkerts is just two spots behind with a 0.33 average. In total offense, Pereira sits in fifth place in the league with an average of 3.85 points per set, with a team leading 132 kills, 10 blocks, and 30 digs on the season. Folkerts averaged 3.46 points per game, putting down 113 kills, nine blocks, and 48 digs on the season. Ringma was set up for 120 kills, put up 11 blocks, and 49 digs in the regular season.

The 2022 PACWEST volleyball championship is set to begin on Feb. 24, 2022 at the Columbia Bible College (CBC). The six-team tournament gives the top two seeds a bye into the semi-finals, which are scheduled for Friday. The medal matches will take place on Sat. Feb. 26, 2022, with the winners punching their tickets to the national championship.

The womens volleyball team, who finished third overall, starts their run for the PACWEST championship on Thursday against the host, and sixth seed, CBC Bearcats in the quarterfinal. During the regular season, they were 2-1 against the Bearcats, winning a pair of sweeps and dropping a four-set decision. The womens volleyball team are the defending PACWEST silver medalists. The game can be streamed live on the starting at 6pm.

The mens volleyball team, who also finished the regular season in third, has won four of their last five matches and will also face to host CBC Bearcats in Thursdays quarterfinal, a team they have beat three times this year. The game can be streamed live on the starting at 8pm.
